Katerina Stefanidaki’s first solo show opens at Zoumboulakis Galleries.
The exhibition features two panoramic drawings-installations (charcoal on paper), with dimensions 300×1050 cm and 300×1150 cm.
The first work depicts an inner-psychological space, into which the artist tries to “abduct” the viewer, while the second illustrates the view from her apartment’s balcony to the urban Amerikis Square, a typical icon of Athens in the ‘70s. Although the full image captures the eye with its painterly completeness and depth, a closer perspective reveals all the details that function as “works within the work”.
The main issue in Stefanidaki’s painting is dialogue with space; mainly by means of perspective and drawing, painted space becomes an extension of real space, rendering the viewer’s presence part of the work.
With a sense of humour and with some cynicism, the artist portrays at the same time her own present and the viewer’s, as well as moments from the life of multifaceted city such as Athens, which keeps changing rapidly.
