Danae Stratou’s work «CUT» – 7 Dividing lines is presented at Zoumboulakis Galleries within the context of the group exhibition “GREY”, curated by Maria Marangou, which is organized simultaneously at the House of Cyprus and Zoumboulakis Galleries.
The work «CUT» is a photographic – sound installation featuring photographs from seven places on the planet where political, economic, nationalist or religious tension has long ago shaped impenetrable dividing linesKOSOVO: NORTH-SOUTH MITROVICA
IRELAND: BELFAST
ETHIOPIA-ERITREA: BADME
WEST BANK, PALESTINE: WALL
INDIAN-PAKISTANI ADMINISTERED KASHMIR: LINE OF CONTROL
MEXICO-USA: BORDER FENCE
CYPRUS: GREEN LINE
Danae Stratou travelled and stood in those places, capturing on photographic stills the two sides of each division. From the resulting 15,000 photographs she chose fourteen (7 + 7), which are set up in pairs one opposite the other, creating in this manner a visual walkway.
The route that is created through these binary oppositions tracks the aspiration to heal the wounds and to let the mind’s eye fill in the chasm.
With the support of the Cyprus Ministry of Education and Culture and the Rethymnon Centre for Contemporary Art.
